MOME - Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design

Programme information

The Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) is a state university with a long tradition. It was founded more than 125 years ago.
Today MOME is a university of higher education that strives for communication in the fields of space, object and media. To achieve this, the university needs to approach art as an interdisciplinary field. This way the counter-juxtaposition of theory and practice, of applied and autonomous work can be avoided.
MOME’s programme lays emphasis on the teaching of reality. To achieve this, it shows students how to solve professional problems through concrete tasks that are then put into practice. This approach enables the students to examine visualization in tandem with present visual practice.

Programme description
Besides meeting the requirements for basic «artistic» education, the animation programme provides an opportunity to acquire the professional, technical and production expertise needed for the creation of animated films, and for the design of animation genres used in current media (including television, advertising, and Internet).
The education programme is modular. It consists of practical tasks, which build on each other, and where design practices are paramount. Students solve tasks by taking on the role of «head designer». This ranges from working out the creative concept to resolving the problems of execution.
The specific knowledge required for this execution is given to the students through various courses such as animation studio, digital techniques and sound design.
Digital techniques help in acquiring the technical procedures required for the execution of work on computers. This includes a digital work procedure going from editing through to post-production and 3D animation. Creative sound provides the platform for understanding the system in relation to sound-music-picture-time-story. It gives practical knowledge on the demands in scoring a production, including recording, editing and other aspects of monologue, dialogue and music.
The first five semesters of the education programme focus on the acquisition of basic knowledge and applications, and, in the second half of the programme, they tackle production orientated tasks, which require independent creative and design approaches.
The final element of the education programme is the production of a diploma piece of work, which is created in the last semester and whose genre, technique and theme are completely optional.
The Animation department is based on different courses: Animation Design, Animation Studio, Sound design and Digital techniques.
Animation design: Individual short films; TV shorts; TV ads, main titles; ID-s, Bumpers, Jingles; Video clips; development of interactive applications.
Animation studio: Directing; Storytelling; Editing; Storyboard, animatics; Character Design; Background Design; Lipsync; Different animation techniques /Puppet, Drawing, etc.
Sound Design: Sound editing; Sound recording; Sound creation; Dialogue, effects.
Digital Techniques: Analogue and Digital Video techniques; Postproduction; SFX; 2D Animation; 3D Animation.
Subjects for degree works: Animated Short films; TV series pilots; Interactive animation; Web based animation applications.

Philosophy

The animation education department started 29 years ago, in 1980, as a specialisation within the Visual Communication department. The co-founder and partner of animation education was Pannonia Filmstudio, the state owned (and sole) animation film studio during the communist era in Hungary.
At the beginning of the nineties Pannonia ceased its support to the university and animation education, but the university continued and since 1980 its education of animation artists has been continuous.
Nowadays the Animation faculty at MOME tries to meet both the complex and special requirements of conventional animation film, and those of the new media by training «designer artists».
