Fine Arts Academy in Kraków - Animated Film Studio

Fine Arts Academy in Kraków - Animated Film Studio

Programme information

The Animated Film Studio was established at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in 1957. It was the first initiative among Polish artistic schools to provide education in animated film making.

Over the successive years, the studio has evolved from its initial role of expanding the experience of painters, graphic artists and sculptors to the present-day highly specialised institution providing diploma-certified education in animated film making. During the five years of studies, students obtain comprehensive specialist education in animated film making and are given an opportunity to acquire knowledge in selected disciplines of visual arts.

The Studio’s curriculum is constructed in such a way as to prepare its graduates to undertake artistic work responding to
modern, professional artistic requirements and to a range of needs of the artistic «market». Students also have an opportunity of establishing practical contacts with the film making industry and participate in large-scale animated film production projects. The Studio also co-organises the annual International Animated Film Workshops, during which the participants have an opportunity to meet distinguished film makers and students from all over the world.

Programme description
The Studio provides comprehensive education in the field of animated film, beginning from preparatory courses, then covering all the successive stages of education, and ending with a MA diploma.
Over the whole course of education, students acquire practical knowledge of the entire animated film production process: concept development, script writing, shooting script preparation, animatics, set building, animation, layout, shooting, image editing, sound editing, soundtrack production, postproduction.
The education covers the entire range of animated film making techniques.
The Studio’s technical equipment enables the students to engage in a range of computer and non-computer activities, using digital and video tools, computers, cameras and 35 mm film.
For their diploma students independently prepare a short animated film or a set of shorts.
As regards the sound, the Studio co-operates with composers, sound effects specialists and recording studios.
Practical film making classes are supplemented by specialist lectures in the history and theory of animated film and by workshops.

Philosophy

The study curriculum is constructed in such a way as to model and expand students’ artistic personalities based on their talents and personal qualities and to provide them with professional skills to allow them to function freely and independently in the world of arts. The skills and experience acquired make it also possible for students to function professionally in the film making industry.
